Overview

Loose arm skin — sometimes called 'bat wings' — is one of the most common complaints following weight loss and a frequent aging concern. No exercise regimen tightens skin that has lost its elasticity. A brachioplasty removes excess skin from the inner upper arm, producing a dramatically slimmer, more defined arm contour. The procedure can be paired with liposuction of the upper arm and is frequently combined with body lift surgery.

Are You a Good Candidate?

Ideal candidates for arm lift typically present with one or more of the following:

  • Significant loose skin on the inner upper arm
  • Arm contour that bothers you in sleeveless clothing
  • Weight stable for at least 6 months
  • Understanding that an inner arm scar is the trade-off

The Procedure

Dr. Fern's approach to arm lift proceeds through the following steps:

  • Incision placed along the inner arm from axilla to elbow, within the natural arm crease
  • Excess skin and underlying fat removed
  • Liposuction of upper and posterior arm contour if needed
  • Closure in layers; arm wrapped in light compression

Recovery

Arms elevated when possible for the first week. Return to work in 7–10 days. Avoid heavy lifting for 4 weeks. Scars are pink and firm for 6–12 months before fading to fine, pale lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the scar visible?

The scar runs along the inner upper arm — visible when the arm is raised, less so in normal positions. Most patients find the trade-off easily worthwhile compared to the skin that was removed.

Can I just do liposuction instead?

If you have good skin elasticity and excess fat (not loose skin), liposuction alone may be sufficient. Most patients seeking brachioplasty have loose skin that won't contract adequately after liposuction alone.
