Overview

Abdominoplasty addresses what diet and exercise cannot: loose abdominal skin, separated rectus muscles (diastasis recti), and persistent lower abdominal fullness. Pregnancy, massive weight loss, and aging each change the abdomen in ways that no training regimen corrects — because the problem is structural, not muscular. Dr. Fern's tummy tuck technique prioritizes a low, hidden scar, muscular repair under appropriate tension, and a natural-looking final contour that doesn't appear over-tightened.

Are You a Good Candidate?

Ideal candidates for tummy tuck typically present with one or more of the following:

  • Loose or overhanging skin on the lower abdomen
  • Muscle separation (diastasis recti) confirmed on physical exam
  • Persistent lower abdominal fullness despite maintained weight
  • Significant skin laxity following pregnancy or weight loss
  • Stable weight for at least 6 months
  • No plans for future pregnancies

The Procedure

Dr. Fern's approach to tummy tuck proceeds through the following steps:

  • Low horizontal incision placed to fall within most underwear and swimwear
  • Abdominal skin elevated to the costal margin
  • Diastasis recti repaired with permanent sutures at the midline
  • Liposuction of flanks often added for improved contour
  • Skin redraped under appropriate tension; excess removed
  • New umbilicoplasty for a natural-appearing navel position

Recovery

Drains removed at 5–7 days. Compression garment worn for 6 weeks. Most patients return to desk work in 2–3 weeks. Walking from day one encouraged to reduce clot risk. Core exercise restricted for 6 weeks. Full results visible at 3–6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a full and mini tummy tuck?

A full tummy tuck addresses the entire abdomen, including muscle repair and navel repositioning. A mini tuck is limited to the area below the navel with a shorter scar. Most patients benefit from the full procedure — Dr. Fern will assess which is appropriate.

Will liposuction be performed at the same time?

Dr. Fern routinely performs conservative flanks and hip liposuction at the time of tummy tuck to improve the overall contour. Direct abdominal liposuction is limited to protect blood supply to the skin flap.

Can I have a tummy tuck after a C-section?

Yes. C-section scars can often be incorporated within the tummy tuck incision, effectively removing the old scar.

Is there a non-surgical alternative?

Devices like CoolSculpting and Emsculpt address fat and muscle separately in appropriate candidates. They do not address loose skin. For patients with significant skin laxity, surgery is the only effective option.
