Overview
Breast ptosis — sagging — occurs when the breast tissue descends relative to the inframammary fold, leaving the nipple pointing downward and the upper breast appearing deflated. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, and time all contribute. A mastopexy reshapes and elevates the breast tissue, reduces the areola if needed, and repositions the nipple-areola complex to a natural, forward-facing position. Dr. Fern offers the full range of mastopexy techniques matched to each patient's degree of ptosis.
Are You a Good Candidate?
Ideal candidates for breast lift typically present with one or more of the following:
- Nipple sitting at or below the inframammary fold
- Upper breast that appears flat or deflated
- Enlarged or stretched areolas
- Breast shape that has changed significantly after pregnancy or weight loss
- Satisfactory breast volume (no implant needed)
The Procedure
Dr. Fern's approach to breast lift proceeds through the following steps:
- Degree of ptosis classified; appropriate mastopexy pattern selected
- Periareolar, vertical (lollipop), or anchor technique based on amount of excess skin
- Nipple-areola complex repositioned to anatomically correct position
- Breast tissue reshaped internally with sutures to create lasting internal support
- Skin removed and closed; scars placed to follow natural breast contours
Recovery
Surgical bra worn for 6 weeks. Mild to moderate soreness for the first week. Most patients return to work by day 7–10. Scars mature and fade over 12–18 months. Dr. Fern's closure technique consistently produces fine, well-faded scars.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I add an implant?
If you have good volume but poor shape, a lift alone is ideal. If you also want fuller upper-pole volume, combining a small implant with a lift achieves both. Dr. Fern can do these together safely.
Can I breastfeed after a mastopexy?
Most women retain breastfeeding ability, though it cannot be guaranteed. If future breastfeeding is a priority, delaying surgery until your family is complete is advisable.
How long do results last?
Results are long-lasting but not permanent — gravity, pregnancy, and aging continue. Maintaining stable weight and wearing supportive bras extends results.
